In an effort
to support and encourage outstanding foreign students coming to Taiwan for all
levels of Chinese language study, and pursuing higher education by undertaking
degree studies, the Ministry of Education, R.O.C. (Taiwan) has been providing
the Huayu Enrichment Scholarship and Taiwan scholarship program since 2006 and
2004.
While providing study opportunities for a wide range of Chinese learning courses and degree programs at universities and colleges in Taiwan, the scholarships also aim to promote communication, understanding and friendship between Taiwan and countries around the world.
In 2013, 25
Huayu Scholarship applications and 11 Taiwan scholarship applications were
submitted to the Education Division, TECO in Houston. After holding a
high-quality selection, 20 applicants have been approved and awarded with
Scholarships. Among 20 recipients, 13 of them have been awarded with Huayu
Scholarship, and ready to go to Taiwan for the 6-12 months Chinese learning
programs. 7 recipients with Taiwan scholarship are going to pursue their
bachelor‘s, master’s, or doctoral degree in Taiwan from
the upcoming academic year.
One of the Taiwan Scholarship recipients, Anna Dugan, is admitted to Agricultural economics international program in National Taiwan University for master’s degree this fall semester. She began her Chinese studies in Taiwan since February of this year. She indicates that she highly recommend this option as learning the language gives her more opportunities to be independent and learn more about the people and the place.

“Deciding to move to
Taiwan to study has been the best decision I've ever made.” Anna says. “I
researched programs in Taiwan and discovered that one of the English programs
available was agricultural economics which is exactly what I'd like to study as
my career path has been in global food distribution. The application process
was not easy but any help I needed was always provided by the university and
the embassies in the States. I feel so fortunate to have been accepted.”

Taiwan offers
a diverse range of study options for international students. In 2013, there are
57 universities and colleges participating in the “Association of Taiwan
Scholarship Program Schools”. More than 180 all-English programs have been
provided by over 40 universities in Taiwan. 37 universities have the Chinese
Language Centers, which provide short-term and long-term Chinese learning program.
In 2012, according to the statistical data of international students in Taiwan,
there were 64,558 foreign students in Taiwan, increased by 11.5% over prior
year.
Taiwan
Scholarship and Huayu Enrichment Scholarship help build bridges between Taiwan
and the world by developing ongoing educational linkages. They give
international students an opportunity to live among Taiwanese who have
different values and norms, get to know each other, and develop trusting
relationships. The application of 2014 Taiwan Scholarship and Huayu Enrichment
Scholarship will be open on February 2014.
