The Ministry of
Education in Taiwan has agreed to establish a new partnership with University
of St. Thomas to develop a “Taiwan Studies Program” in Houston to facilitate
interdisciplinary or academic research and teaching with institutional
oversight on topics germane to the study of Taiwan.
This program
shall include enhancing course offerings on Taiwan Studies by hiring a Post-Doc
Fellow specializing in East Asian contemporary politics and foreign relations
with a special focus on Taiwan’s domestic development and foreign relations. University of St. Thomas shall develop
academic exchanges with Taiwan through annual faculty exchanges, biennial
conferences, and undergraduate/graduate student studies abroad to Taiwan.
To reach the
objectives of cooperation and programs, a Taiwan Studies Grant Signing Ceremony
was held on May 2, 2016 at University of St. Thomas. Director General
Louis Huang of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Houston and Dr. Ivany
president of the University of St. Thomas, both served as witnesses, and many
influential community leaders and sponsors were also present to celebrate as well.
