The Education Division of the Taipei
Economic and Cultural Office in Houston organized a year-end work review
meeting on December 13, 2016 to review
educational collaboration projects between Taiwan Ministry of Education (MOE) and
Houston Independent School District (HISD). The Education Division was pleased
to welcome Mr. Richard A. Carranza who previously served as superintendent in
San Francisco Unified School District and was named superintendent of HISD this
August.
This meeting also provided the opportunity
to honor Mr. Greg Meyers, a trustee of the Board of Education at HISD for 12
years and long term educational partner with Taiwan MOE. Mr. Meyers resigned
from the position and will serve on the Board of Education until the end of
this year.
In Director Sophie Chou’s welcome remarks,
she recognized Mr. Meyers’s support and accomplishments in connecting teachers
and students of the United States and Taiwan together. His efforts created a
platform for educators and children to communicate with one another on an
international scale. His endeavors greatly assisted Taiwan MOE and HISD in
achieving many projects that benefit teachers and students. The Education Division
has worked together with HISD on projects including the following:
l Establishing agreement for
visiting Taiwanese teachers to teach Chinese language classes in HISD: Visiting
Teacher Program 2014, 2015, 2016
l Holding Mandarin language
education workshop: Innovations in Mandarin Education 2014
l Providing HISD students of
disadvantaged families with an opportunity to take on short-term studies in
Taiwan: Prominent Young Scholars to Taiwan 2014
l Accommodating educational exchange programs:
Taipei Youth Folk Sports Group 2015 and 2016; Starlight Foundation Storytelling
Delegation, 2016
l Establishing educational
partnership: Agreement on Education between Taipei Department of Education and
HISD 2015; Partnership between Huiwen Elementary School and Sharpstown
International School 2016; Huiwen Elementary School and Ed White Elementary

l Establishing partnership among

Educational officers of HISD, Mr. Lance
Menster, Mr. Jeff McCanna and Mr. Adam Stephens; school principals, Mr. Chaolin
Chang, Mrs. Jade Adams, teachers and students also attended the meeting. They
took the opportunity to give their best wishes to Mr. Meyers and applaud his
dedication to education. Superintendent Carranza noted that he is grateful the children
of our community are provided with abundant opportunities for international
experience. Their hopes and dreams are expanded and enriched by the great
events and initiatives that have been created for them. Through his
collaborative spirit and actions, Mr. Meyers nurtured a sturdy partnership between
Taiwan MOE and HISD. Under the leadership of the new superintendent, this good
friendship will continue to grow and thrive into full bloom as the days move
forward.
